Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Warriors Table

Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept fans guessing with deep backstory, a diverse cast of heroes, and a gripping narrative including celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces expanding in influence within the city.

Warning: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season are included.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

Episode 3 finished on a major cliffhanger and revealed the initial group of adventurers who will split off from the main group to embark on their separate journey, apart from the additional parties.

The combat-focused team includes Teor Pridesire (played by Travis Willingham), the agile character (Laura Bailey), the strong-willed figure (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (Sam), and Kattigan (the actor).

The Reason for Division

Considering 13 cast members, it was clear from the beginning that keeping everyone at the same party would be unfeasible.

This explains, the opening chapters of Campaign 4 serve as an Overture, connecting the individual narratives before splitting into three separate parties: Soldiers, Planners, and Seekers.

What Defines the Warrior Group

As described by the Dungeon Master, the combat-focused party is for participants who enjoy a classically intense battle-oriented gameplay experience where peaceful solutions are scarce.

At first glance, characters like the reluctant priest Wicander Halovar might seem out of place, but the developments of the third episode demonstrate why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.

Reasons to Leave

First, the party has a clear idea where to head next after a intense initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi Fang—whose death started the story’s plot—exploited The Crow Keepers for his own means, invading the hidden lair, attacking Thimble, and taking all the enchanted items to sell off.

The antagonist then cleared his obligations and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the remote area, north of the urban center, with Cyd pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Additionally, each member has a specific drive to exit the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, wants vengeance.
  • Kattigan knows the region and advises that it is a dangerous location.
  • The warrior and The healer, having resisted his house’s orders to execute the fighter and instead freed him, have nowhere else to go.
  • But, their position as prominent individuals in House Halovar could help the group reach locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Additionally, Teor vowed a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now go with him wherever.

Fugitives

In addition, all of them are sought by the rulers that govern Dol-Makjar for a multiple motives, making staying in the city too risky:

  • Thimble and The hero are notorious outlaws.
  • Tyranny and The cleric turned against the influential house and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is targeted for elimination by House Halovar.

This leaves them little choice but to head to the remote area in pursuit of Casimir.

What’s Next?

From episode three’s Cooldown, we discover that the Soldiers table will be absent the following episode, leaving the other eight cast members to assemble the Seekers and Strategists parties.

Audiences can expect finding out which players will be in which group in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, available to watch on next week.
